BALIK ISKWELA SA ISLA PROJECT: Gilutongan Island

Gilutongan Elementary School is located in an islet, 20 mins away from Cordova, Cebu. The main sources of livelihood for the Gilutonganon’s are fishing, seaweed cultivation and local tourism. Despite being a favorite diving spot for foreign and local tourist, the islet has NO natural source of fresh water. Generators are also the ONLY source of electricity in Gilutongan and are only available from 6pm to 10pm daily.

The school has a current student population of 490 from Daycare to Grade 7.

By the last week of May, my friends and I were able to gather a good number of resources to provide educational supply packs to the Daycare, Kindergarten, and First Grade students (as well as a few of the 2nd and 3rd graders) with the help and support of generous friends and acquaintances.

It was such a privilege to meet the children and to contribute a little in a way. Many of them do not have the school supplies to get through the entire school year, but with a little help from the educational-packs they can begin a new chapter in their lives at school.

Their smiles just bring inexplainable joy in my heart.

With our deepest appreciation, we’d like to say THANK YOU to all the generous and wonderful people who donated and gave time and effort for this activity.Your support has made this a HUGE success.

  1. This is great! I’ve always wanted to partake into project like such but I never know where to begin.

It took me a little while to begin myself. My first volunteering was in an NGO. There are a lot of organizations and NGOs that need volunteers; maybe you can start from there? 🙂
